The 3D Bandwagon

Most Hollywood studios caught the virus now (or should I say “again”); everybody wants to shoot in 3D, or so it would seem. A lot of the big budget movies of the coming summer have a 3D moniker attached to them. While it often brings good entertainment value, one should wonder is it worth the admission price hike?

Because, after all, 3D is exciting now that it is new (sort of); people always crave what they haven’t seen before. But what happens later, after the audience has seen most monsters/aliens/giant transforming robots/cowboys/pirates/superheroes and villains in 3D?  Read more...  Read more »

With a critical and commercial success like The Dark Knight, What is next for Jonathan and Christopher Nolan? Is it safe to say, from that point, the only way is down? The bar was raised so high that our expectations have already gone through the roof. The new sequel is not even in production yet.

The Dark Knight Rises is said to feature Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman

For a Better Transformers: Dark of the Moon

We are not part of the crowd of Michael Bay haters, but we have not been satisfied with the way he has handled the first two movies. The fact that they made an insane amount of money will not help the situation and get us better movies. Actually it will more likely be the reverse. Vindicated in the way he directed the previous installments, he will more likely either get cocky and shoot himself in the foot with the third one or just make another remake of the first (like the second movie).

Is the Transformers franchise just about giant talking robots, destruction and mayhem?

Is the Transformers franchise just about giant talking robots, destruction and mayhem?

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a recycled Transformers, down to the Bumblebee’s speech impediment, the Decepticons’ quest, or the fight in the desert (which looks like the same desert by the way). Mostly identical “plots” with slightly different characters, on-the-nose dialogs and childish humor, wrapped in more or less the same order. Imagine characters delivering the same lines in both movies and you will have an idea.  Read more...  Read more »

Movie Mistakes: Characters Behaving Stupid

August 5th, 2010  |   By   |   278 views  |   1 Comment »

This very common mistake is the bread and butter of most average-to-bad horror movies. Without it they have no story. Brainless characters put themselves in dangerous situations just to get in trouble and jumpstart the plot; that way, they can have something frightening to scream and run away from.

A case of mistaken identity early and Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant on the left) is in for a world of hurt.

But it is not a monopoly of the horror genre. We have encountered quite a few cases from various movie genres. Here are two examples from movies we can consider good, an great classic and a recent blockbuster.  Read more...  Read more »

Movie Mistakes: Running Away From Something

July 19th, 2010  |   By   |   116 views  |   3 Comments »

Remember Chuck Jones’s Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry cartoons? When a character has something heavy coming right at him, he runs the other way. And we have a chase scene. That is a cartoon. Well it seems like also this happens in movies live action or animated. Here are a few examples below.

Jurassic Park

Alan and Tim (off screen) climbing down away from the tumbling car.

Memorable Movie Lines: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

In our first scene, Jessica Rabbit walks into Eddie Valiant’s office. That’s after he took the pictures that started the whole thing (her playing pattycake with Acme). Jessica is not happy about those photos; the first time she met Eddie, he received a resounding slap the from the cartoon vixen.

Jessica Rabbit, "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way."

This time she is trying to offer an explanation. Here we are right in the middle of the conversation.  Read more...  Read more »

The Name is Absolute Fiction

April 20th, 2010  |   By   |   6 views  |   1 Comment »

Welcome. I’m using an image from on of my all-time favorite movies, the tightly crafted classic High Noon, to kick off this website. My interest is STORY. Dramas, thrillers, action-adventure, sci-fi, romance. I’m addicted to great stories. Believe it or not, I discovered movie classics fairly late. I used to mostly concentrate on new releases. Thank God for cable.
